The Soil Tells Our Story

Hello fellow earth lovers! My name is Gerrit van Houweling. I was born and raised in the High Desert of Central Oregon on a small 10‑acre ranch, where connecting with the seasons and nature was part of everyday life

After high school, I split my time between courses at Central Oregon Community College and working on local food and herb farms focused on crop production and soil health. At 19, I started my first microfarm growing medicinal herbs, applying self‑study and organic practices to learn the fundamentals of soil science through trial and error.

The Path to Regenerative Farming

That experience led me deeper into regenerative farming and permaculture. Today, I steward a 5‑acre biodynamic permaculture farm in Tumalo, Oregon called Satori Farms, where we practice and experiment with approaches such as Permaculture Design, Jadam, Korean Natural Farming (KNF), Actively Aerated Compost Tea (AACT), and Biodynamics—all to build soil and grow food on desert sand. Farming in a challenging bioregion with limited capital taught me resourcefulness and strengthened my understanding of soil health, composting, water‑wise techniques, and microbiology.

Sharing Knowledge & Inspiring Change

After attending intensive workshops in Oregon and abroad, I earned a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) and began teaching Jadam and KNF workshops locally, in Florida, and in the Caribbean.

In 2025, my Father Dirk and I founded High Desert Soil Alchemy with a mission to share these hard‑earned insights and inspire communities—both local and global—with soil‑focused products, regenerative farming services, and ecological lifestyle practices.
