What is Bokashi Composting ? The Bokashi Method

The Bokashi Method

The Bokashi method, developed by Dr. Teruo Higa in Japan in the 1980s, means “fermented organic matter.” Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi relies on anaerobic fermentation with beneficial microbes—such as lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic bacteria—to break down food waste, manures, and plant matter in a sealed, oxygen‑free environment.

This process produces nutrient‑rich compost in a fraction of the time of conventional piles and safely handles challenging scraps like meats, dairy, and oils. It reduces pathogens, preserves beneficial organisms, and prevents valuable nutrients from escaping into the air.

Beyond composting, Bokashi Bran and EM solutions can reduce odors, restore soil and water health, and enhance plant vitality. With its speed, versatility, and ecological benefits, Bokashi is truly a game‑changer for sustainable waste management.

Sharing Knowledge & Inspiring Change

We are very excited to announce the launch of our new locally crafted, upcycled Brewer’s Spent Grain (BSG) Bokashi Bran!

At last, there is a local, economical source for Bokashi Bran to serve our Central Oregon community and beyond. Recognizing its many benefits—regenerating soils, managing waste, treating water, and supporting diverse agricultural uses—we set out to make this product a reality for our region.

We begin by sourcing fresh Brewer’s Spent Grain (BSG) from our friends at Crux Fermentation Project in Bend. This grain is then inoculated and fermented with a consortium of beneficial microorganisms, creating a powerful, concentrated biological product known as Bokashi Bran. Once dried and packaged, it remains shelf‑stable for over a year when stored properly.

Bokashi Bran offers a wide range of practical applications, including:

• Improved water retention in soils

• Enhanced nutrient cycling

• Compost acceleration and activation

• Bioremediation and neutralization of polluted water

• Odor control for kitty litter, composting toilets, and animal yards

• Unique ability to break down difficult food wastes such as dairy and meats—a true game changer for food waste management

Uses & Benefits of Bokashi Bran

To minimize our footprint and be as ecological as possible, we ferment and dry this Bokashi Bran with the power of the High Desert sun rather than a facility, making our manufacturing process virtually carbon neutral, while still delivering a superior product.
