What is Bokashi Composting ? The Bokashi Method

The Bokashi Method

The Bokashi method, developed by Dr. Teruo Higa in Japan in the 1980s, means “fermented organic matter.” Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi relies on anaerobic fermentation with beneficial microbes—such as lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic bacteria—to break down food waste, manures, and plant matter in a sealed, oxygen‑free environment.

This process produces nutrient‑rich compost in a fraction of the time of conventional piles and safely handles challenging scraps like meats, dairy, and oils. It reduces pathogens, preserves beneficial organisms, and prevents valuable nutrients from escaping into the air.

DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide): A powerful natural solvent that penetrates deep into tissue, supports healing, and helps deliver beneficial herbal compounds deeper into the body.

Peppermint (Leaf & Essential Oil): Carries the same properties as spearmint, but contains much higher concentrations of menthol, giving it a powerful cooling effect.

Spearmint leaf is high in Menthol, a cooling terpene found to relieve itching and irritated skin. It is also loaded with more anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and ant-bacterial properties.

Lavender (Flowers & Essential Oil): High in anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. Calms and soothes irritated skin, supports wound recovery, and has a calming effect on the nervous system.

Cinnamon contains anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and antioxidant components that can effectively fight free radicals and skin infections. It has a warming effect on the skin.

Stinging Nettle is high in polyphenols, chlorophyl, and oxyacetylene which soothe inflammation and has strong antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties.

Arnica flowers and Arnica Oil contain a variety of phytochemicals such as flavonoids and acids that may sooth pain or inflammation.

Mullein has very high mucilage content making it effective at restoring and retaining skin moisture. It also contains strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Horsetail is one of the richest sources of Silica in the plant kingdom. Silica is critical for collagen synthesis and wound healing. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Red Clover stimulates the skins natural collagen production and contains isoflavones which act as strong anti-inflammatories. It also neutralizes free radicals with its high anti-oxidant properties.

Burdock Root: Provides anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxifying benefits due to compounds like chlorogenic acid and arctiin, helping clear both skin and blood.

Chickweed is rich in vitamins C and A and is known for its cooling and emollient properties which sooth and nourish irritated skin. It is also an anti-microbial and has vulnerary properties which make it a powerful anti-inflammatory as well.

Calendula is high in carotenoids and terpenoids that may regenerate skin and calm inflammation. It can sooth skin on hot sunny days due to its rich anti-oxidant content.

Plantain is another herb rich in Allantoin, which may help skin regeneration. It also contains high anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties.

Yarrow is loaded with anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties that promoted wound healing and sooth irritated skin.

Comfrey is a powerful herb for skin and tissue. It contains high amounts of Allontoin, rosmarinic acid and tannins, compounds that may accelerate cell regeneration as well as sooth pain and inflammation.

Olive oil is high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and has a nourishing and hydrating effect on the skin.

Castor oil is rich in fatty acids. It contains a high amount of ricinoleic acid (up to 90%) as well as other monosaturated fats such as oleic and linoleic acids that are anti-microbial and help fight inflammation.
